All types of diabetes have slightly different symptoms. According to the American Diabetes Association as well as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention the earlier that the patient seeks medical help and a treatment plan is put in place the lower the risk is for developing the serious and potentially life threatening conditions associated with diabetes. Anyone experiencing any of these very common symptoms should make an appointment with their doctor to be screened for diabetes or prediabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes is sometimes referred to as juvenile diabetes since it can appear in childhood. Type 1 diabetes is relatively uncommon with only about five percent of diabetics having this form of the condition. It occurs when the pancreas is not producing any insulin at all. Insulin must be provided for the body to be able to utilize the blood glucose to fuel the cells and keep the body functioning.

Typical symptoms of Type 1 diabetes include:

  • Very frequent urination usually in large volumes
  • Constant thirst and very high water or liquid consumption
  • Extreme exhaustion and fatigue even with low activity
  • Weight loss that is rapid and unusual
  • Increased food consumption and hunger
  • Mood swings and irritability

The body is basically trying to take in more liquids and more food to generate the energy that the cells need, leading to the dramatic hunger and thirst experienced. On the other hand the body is also eliminating the high blood glucose that cannot be absorbed through increased urine production. This cycle produces imbalances in the hormone levels, brain and body chemicals and overall body functioning that can result in total system shut down if not treated.

Type 2 Diabetes:

Type 2 diabetes, especially in the early stages, may have no symptoms or such mild symptoms that the person simply dismisses them as a cold, flu or other minor health issue. Since they can come and go or differ in levels of intensity it is important to have regular blood tests to check for Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.

The symptoms of Type 2 diabetes, if present, include:

  • Larger than normal volumes of urine
  • More frequent urination
  • Increased water or liquid and fluid consumption
  • Weight loss without dieting or changing exercise levels
  • Fatigue and chronic exhaustion
  • Infections of the skin that are more frequent than normal
  • Vision problems
  • Bladder, gum and mouth infections
  • Tingling sensation in the hands, feet, finger or toes
  • Slow healing of wounds, cuts, bruises or lesions on the skin

Gestational Diabetes:

For most women that are expecting a standard screening for gestational diabetes will happen at the 24 to 28 week mark of pregnancy. This is because there are very few if any symptoms of gestational diabetes and the small changes in urination, food and water intake are typically attributed to the pregnancy itself.

For women with gestational diabetes the most common symptoms include thirst, hunger and frequent urination, but they may or may not be extreme. Some expectant Moms may also find they have blurred vision, especially when they are fatigued or towards the later part of the day. Women that have prediabetes before the pregnancy, even if undiagnosed, are much more likely to develop gestational diabetes than women without.
